Objective
To develop and produce materials it is necessary to know the proportion of free and combined nitrogen in steel. The combined nitrogen also has to be classified under individual nitride-forming elements. New methods are to be developed to achieve these aims. Using microanalysis (X-ray microanalysis, scanning Auger electron spectroscopy, analytical transmission electron microscopy) the proportion, size and chemical composition of the nitrides, carbonitrides and carbides down to approximately 1nm will be determined on various steels. The chemical methods should lead to direct industrial determination of these phases in steel.
