PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING THE RESISTANCE SPOT WELDABILITY OF SHEET STEEL MATERIALS.

Objective

RESISTANCE SPOT WELDING IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY EMPLOYED PROCESSES IN THE MASS PRODUCTION INDUSTRIES FOR THE JOINING OF THIN SHEET. IN SPITE OF THIS THERE IS LIMITED STANDARDIZATION REGARDING QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURES, ASSESSMENT OF WELD QUALITY AND MEASUREMENT OF WELDING PARAMETERS. THE DIFFICULTY IN PRODUCING STANDARDS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO LACK OF INFORMATION IN TWO MAIN AREAS. FIRSTLY, THERE ARE NO STANDARDIZATION OF TECHNIQUES TO MEASURE EITHER WELD CURRENT OR THE DIAMETER OF A WELD WHICH HAS BEEN PEEL TESTED. SECONDLY, THE INFLUENCE OF THE ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RESISTANCE WELDING EQUIPMENT ON WELDABILITY IS NOT CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED WORK ARE TO ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY THESE ISSUES FOR UNCOATED LOW CARBON AND HIGH STRENGTH STEELS AND THUS PERMIT THE WRITING OF REALISTIC STANDARDS.
