Objective
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE SURFACE REACTIVITY AND ADHESION PROPERTIES OF COLD-ROLLED ENAMELLED PRODUCTS PRODUCED FROM CONTINUOUSLY-CAST STEEL.
TAKING AS A BASIS THE GENERAL CONCEPT THAT SURFACES ARE PHASES PER SE IN THERMODYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM WITH THE MASS OF THE MATERIAL AND THAT THEIR REACTIVITY CAN, IN PRINCIPLE, BE PREDETERMINED, THE SPECIFIC OBJECT OF THIS PROJECT IS TO MAKE THE SURFACES OF COLD ROLLED PRODUCTS INTENDED FOR ENAMELLING INHERENTLY PREDISPOSED TO MAKING ADHESIVE BONDS WITH ENAMEL.
IT IS IMPORTANT, ABOVE ALL, TO ESTABLISH A CORRELATION BETWEEN ADHESION AND SURFACE REACTIVITY FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF ENAMELLING AND, SUBSEQUENTLY, TO ASSESS THE WAY IN WHICH THE INDIVIDUAL FABRICATION PHASES AFFECT SURFACE REACTIVITY.
THIS WILL BE DONE BY STUDYING SETS OR SAMPLES FROM THE PRODUCTION LINE.
THE INFORMATION THUS ACQUIRED CAN BE USED TO HELP OPTIMIZE PRETREATMENT AND ENAMELLING CYCLES BY ENABLING SUITABLE CHANGES TO BE MADE IN THE METALLURGICAL PROCESSES.
AS A RESULT OF TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN ENAMELLING PROCESSES AND THE NEED TO RATIONALIZE AND AUTOMATE THE PRE-TREATMENT CYCLES, THE SURFACE QUALITY REQUIREMENTS FOR COLD-ROLLED PRODUCTS INTENDED FOR ENAMELLING ARE FAR MORE STRINGENT NOW THAN THEY WERE IN THE PAST.
FURTHERMORE, THE FACT THAT, WHEN THEY ARE ENAMELLED, CONTINUOUSLY-CAST STEELS BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY FROM THOSE PRODUCED IN THE CASTING PIT, EVEN WHEN THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE MELT IS THE SAME, INDICATES THE NEED FOR A NEW FINAL SURFACE STATE FOR COLD-ROLLED PRODUCTS TO MATCH THE VARIOUS FABRICATION PROCESSES.
