Objective
THE MAIN RESEARCH EFFORT HERE IS CONCENTRATED ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF TURBINES (SHAFTS) AND THE CHOICE OF SUITABLE STEEL GRADES. SERVICE CONDITIONS HAVE AN IMPORTANT EFFECT ON THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL WHICH IS SUBJECTED TO LOAD CYCLE VARIATIONS.
BECAUSE OF THE INCREASINGLY STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS FOR POWER PLANT COMPONENTS AND THE PRESSURE FOR HIGHER ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY AND GREATER FABRICATING SAFETY, NEW STEELMAKING AND TREATMENT METHODS HAVE BEEN USED FOR SOME YEARS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF THICK-WALLED POWER PLANT COMPONENTS.
THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THESE METHODS INCLUDE:
- OXYGEN BLOWING (LD)
- CALCIUM POWDER INJECTION (CAB) IN THE LADLE
- ELECTROSLAG REMELTING (ESR)
- BOEHLER ELECTROSLAG TOPPING (BEST) AND
- VACUUM CARBON DEOXIDATION (VCD).
WITH EACH OF THESE PROCESSES IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN PRODUCTS THAT ARE MORE HOMOGENEOUS, PURER AND HAVE LOWER CONTENTS OF TRACE ELEMENTS THAN WITH CONVENTIONAL REFINING IN THE ELECTRIC FURNACE. THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE TOUGHNESS OF THESE STEELS IN THE DELIVERY STATE IS UNDENIABLE.
SO FAR, HOWEVER, INSUFFICIENT RESEARCH HAS BEEN DEVOTED TO THE EFFECT OF THESE PARAMETERS ON THE SERVICE BEHAVIOUR OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE STEELS UNDER LONG TIME STRESSING IN THE CREEP RUPTURE RANGE.
IN THE COURSE OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT RELIABLE DATA WILL SYSTEMATICALLY BE COMPILED FOR THE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT GROUP OF 1 % CRMOV STEELS AND EVALUATED A COMPARATIVE BASIS. THE MAIN AIM IS TO INVESTIGATE THE LONG TIME TOUGHNESS BEHAVIOUR.
