Fatigue strength of laser welded joints of coated steel for vehicles

Objective

The aim of this research project is to obtain fatigue resistance data on laser welds of thin autobody sheets and to compare this with results on spot welded and spot weld bonded and the scatter band obtained from previous ECSC research on similar joints. Failures of samples of uncoated metal, electrogalvanized steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminium-coated and zinc-nickel-coated steels, some pre-coated with a thin organic film, will be examined by SEM and other laboratory techniques.
