Development of environmentally friendly organic coatings for the automotive industry

Objective

Value can be added to metallic coated steel by applying organic coatings with the aim of making sealing measures obsolete for the automotive producer or by substituting for ED-paint and filler. The main objectives for this project are substituting environmentally hazardous Cr(VI) pre-treatments and optimising formability, weldability and corrosion protection by the introduction of Cr-free permanent lubricant primers. These primers will allow: - lubricants and their vapours to be avoided on the production line; - a decrease in the use of Cr(VI) containing primers which may set free Cr(VI) to the environment; - Cr-acid treatment during the production of coated steel products to be avoided. An evaluation of alternative joining concepts for non-weldable systems, factors governing corrosion resistance on cut edges and adhesion of subsequent layers will be carried out.
