Control of the strip surface oxide layer for pickle-free hot rolled steel

Objective

The project deals with the suppression of acid pickling by two main actions: The production of thin scales in the hot strip mill by a better control of the oxidising condition and of adherent scales by a control of their structure and mechanical properties at each step of the processing line, and the replacement of acid pickling by gas reduction favoured by small thickness scales. In addition to being an important contribution to the environment, through acid pickling free processing lines, these technical developments will lead to new steel products and to a shortening of the production line.
