FATIGUE STRENGTH AND FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF WELDED AND STIFFENED RECTANGULAR HOLLOW CONNECTIONS.

Objectif

BETWEEN 1975 AND 1980 FATIGUE STRENGTH TESTS ON RECTANGULAR HOLLOW-SECTION CONNECTIONS (K-TYPE AND N-TYPE FRAMEWORK NODAL POINTS) WERE CARRIED OUT WITH ECSC SUPPORT. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS AN EXTENSION OF THAT WORK. THE AIM IS TO FILL IN THE GAPS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS PARAMETERS ON THE FATIGUE STRENGTH AND RESISTANCE OF FRAMEWORK AND QUADRILATERAL BEAM NODAL POINTS.

THE RESEARCH IS ALSO AIMED AT DETERMINING THE REDUCTION IN FATIGUE STRENGTH WITH MAXIMUM CYCLES OF 2.10 TO THE POWER 6 TO 10 TO THE POWER 7. THE TESTS WILL BE SPLIT INTO THREE PHASES:

PHASE I : DETERMINATION OF "ALTERNATING STRESS SR - NUMBER OF CYCLES TO FRACTURE NB" CURVES FOR K NODAL POINTS WITH VARYING WIDTH TO WALL THICKNESS RATIOS, OVERLAPPING AND SHOULDER ANGLES.

PHASE II : DETERMINATION OF "SR - NB" CURVES FOR T NODES UNDER VERTICAL STRESS AND MOMENT WITH VARYING WIDTH TO WALL THICKNESS RATIOS AND MAXIMUM STRESS RATIO R.

PHASE III : DETERMINATION OF "SR - NB" CURVES FOR K NODES WITH VERY HIGH CYCLES NB > 2.10 TO THE POWER 6.



RESULTS:

THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH WILL BE USED PRINCIPALLY FOR CHECKING AND CONFIRMATION OF DATA TO BE EMPLOYED AS THE BASIS FOR CALCULATIONS IN THE DIMENSIONING OF DYNAMICALLY-STRESSED HOLLOW-SECTION FRAMEWORK STRUCTURES IN, FOR EXAMPLE, CRANES, BRIDGES AND WINDING GEAR. THE RESULTS FROM THE TESTS ON T-NODES (E.G. FOR QUADRILATERAL BEAMS) AND TO DEVELOP A METHOD FOR THEIR DIMENSIONING. AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FATIGUE STRENGTH AND RESISTANCE DIMENSIONING OF HOLLOW-SECTION NODES WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION BEING PAID TO GEOMETRICAL PARAMETERS (SIZES AND STRUCTURAL SHAPES).
