Objective

The aim of this research is to demonstrate that real fire conditions for large compartments (Atriums, Stations halls, Industrial buildings) are such that the present fire regulations of the Standards are too severe for steel structures, and to define new requirements which better correspond to real fire conditions. Thermomechanical simulations using sophisticated computer programs shall result in more realistic ISO fire resistance requirements for each type of building as a function of their specific parameters.
