Reduction of coke oven pollution

Objective

Still handicapped by its negative image of polluting, occupational health detrimental industry, cokemaking has developed expensive and sophisticated pollution abatement systems. However, R&D investment is still required to progress on the way of "zero pollution coking plant". It is necessary as well to establish mutual cooperation between European countries in that field. This regrouping of different proposals under this large joined programme is undoubtedly a first step in this direction.

There are 8 components in the joint-project:

a. Zero effluent operation of coke plants
b. Decontamination of coke oven sites
c. Production of reduction gas from coke oven raw gas
d. Coke plant treatment
e. Treatment of gaseous waste
f. Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia
g. Effects of coal blending and additives on coke oven emissions
h. Environmental aspects of coal carbonization.

Significant progress in coke oven pollution abatement is expected from this project. This is critical for the survival of the Community coking industry.
