Influence of Coking Coal Properties, Chamber Width and Process Conditions on Important Coke Quality Parameters (CSR, Micum Slope)

Objective

The aim of this proposal is to investigate the influence of

- the composition of the coal blend

- the composition of the coal ash and

- coal pre-treatment (grinding, preheating)

and, in a second step, of

- chamber width and

- coke treatment (wet quenching, coke dry quenching)

on novel coke quality parameters, like

- the NSC-test (NSC-Nippon Steel Corporation)

- the extended Micum test.

Due to the increasing injection of pulverised coal into the blast furnace tuyeres, in the next future up to 250 kg per ton of hot metal, the specific coke consumption will become as low as 250 kg per ton of hot metal. That means that the expectations of coke quality and consistency are still growing and it is, more than before, necessary to produce premium quality coke.

Project activities will cover:

- the measurement of the NSC and extended Micum (or rather ISO) coke parameters;

- the production of coke under comparable conditions in a pilot coke oven with variable width (450 to 850 mm);

- coke from industrial size plants will be available, from 450. 600 and 850 mm chambers width, for comparison purposes (the Iast figure refers to the jumbo coke-making reactor (JCR);

- a comparison with results of the French proposal no. 7220-EB/343;

- comparative tests according to the novel test methods (NSC tests and extended Micum).
