Objective
There is a strong environmental and economic need to utilise fly ash from coal-fired power stations as an alternative to dumping. The recently produced European Standard, EN 450, entitled 'Fly Ash for Concrete' has set new specifications for the use of ash, particularly with respect to carbon content and pozzolanic activity, which preclude the use of ash of qualities hitherto regarded as acceptable.
The aim of the project is to test various qualities of fly ash for a range of established and new uses, and to investigate the test methods of EN 450 to see whether the criteria of the Standard are appropriate in practice. In particular, the test programme will attempt to confirm that higher loss-on-ignition values (and carbon contents) than those recommended can be tolerated.
