Improvements in systems for rescue of trapped miners

Objective

Systems and equipment for the location of trapped miners and their rescue by means of a large-diameter borehole have been developed in previous studies. The aim of this project was to further improve these systems by reducing delays and increasing the chance of survival.

There were three objectives:-

- drilling of a 96 mm pilot hole,
- trial of an auto-guidance system for a vertical hole, and
- development, by a firm of constructors, of a hole reamer.
