Objective
- A realistic estimate of the contribution of coking plants to NOx emissions and the resulting ambient pollution;
- standardization of sampling and analytical methods for measuring ambient pollution through cooperation with the CPM;
- possibilities of reducing emissions, taking into account economic and technical constraints;
- identification of the role, so far not fully explained, of other airborne pollutants in the conversion of nitrogen monoxide into other nitrogen oxides.
The results obtained from the previous research project (No 7257-01/363) are based on measurements taken near coke oven batteries which were relatively old. New systems for heating coke ovens have since been developed which can be expected to reduce NOx emissions. Against the background of more stringent environmental protection provisions coming into force the measurements taken at the modern heating installations installed at the Mannesmann and Prosper coking plants will provide information on the actual reduction in NOx emissions caused by the heating of coke ovens.
For the moment, the correlation between NOx ambient pollution and NOx emissions remains unclear. A further part of these studies will be the identification of any further factors affecting NOx ambient pollution which may be caused by other atmospheric pollution components.
