Bag filters and fume desulphurization in iron ore sintering plants

Objective

The purpose of this project is to test new techniques for cleaning either the fume from the whole sintering strand or the fumes issuing from the hot wind boxes. The techniques to be tested are:

- bag filters with or without lime precoating to retain dusts and acid and organic aerosols;
- injection of desulphurizing agents in conjunction with bag filters to desulphurize the fumes from the hot wind boxes.

A further aim of the research will be to assess the suitability of these new techniques for the cleaning of fume resulting from the use of more highly-polluting ores and fuels and the scope they offer for recycling of steel industry byproducts, either in the mineral charge (sludges and dusts) or as a desulphurizing agent (basic slags).

The work will be carried out on a pilot cleaning 4 000 to 7 000 m{3}/h. It will thus provide the Community steel industry with its first rational basis for pollution control in iron ore sintering plants.
As conclusion of the first phase of research, we can retain that the depolluting efficiency of the filter corresponds to the forecasted target. The raw filtration of windbox exhaust gases is however delicate to realize, because of the great produced pressure drop. It will be necessary to envisage then the installation of a strong bag cleaning device or the use of a precoating device permitting to modify the structure of the dust cake. These two devices - one of them has been tested during the research on a 2 months period - are worth to be experimented during a longer time to be able to validate the conclusions.

For the second phase, the results obtained with precoating are comforting, because the working in desulfurization will be executed with an important quantity of desulfurization agent used in recirculation.
The work will be carried out jointly by the LECES, the technical departments of steelworks and the IRSID sintering department. Manufacturers of bag filters and fume desulphurizing plant will be enlisted to design a pilot plant and provide backup services during the research.

The project will consist of two successive phases:

A - Experimental study of process fume filtration and test of 'precoating' (one and a half years);

B - Experimental study of the filtration and desulphurization of fumes from the hot wind boxes (one and a half years).
