Objective
The aim of the research project is to select the most effective biological treatment technology to remove phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and cyanides from contaminated coke oven plant sites, still in operation.
Groundwater contamination will be also analysed.
The characterization of soils will be done in collaboration with DTM.
Two types of soil will be studied:
- natural sand soil;
- sand filling material.
The program of work will be phased as follows:
- Identification of organic contaminated areas in coke oven sites;
- Delimitation of sampling areas;
- Development of sampling programme for soils and groundwaters;
- Characterization of soils and groundwaters;
- Evaluation of concentration levels of pollutants with depth;
- Effects of soil pollution on groundwaters;
- Evaluation of the effect of soil characterization parameters on biological treatment efficiencies (treatment in a laboratorial bioreactor, heap leaching tests);
- Optimization of biological degradation conditions;
- Development of an analytical programme to evaluate the biological treatment efficiency;
- Study of an integrated soil treatment, in agreement with the other partners of the research project;
- Tecnico-economic evaluation of biological treatment, in collaboration with the other partners of the research.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
