Objective
The overall objective of the research is to develop a knowledge-based system to improve the control of fume extraction/cleaning plant installations associated with steelworks' extraction systems.
As a result of the study, which included a 1 year monitoring exercise and intensive plant trials, the knowledge regarding the system operation and fault identification has been greatly enhanced. A major benefit of developing the knowledge based system (KBS) is that this knowledge will be retained and can be updated in the form of quality rule documentation and computer coding.
A mathematical model has been developed as a part of the study to simulate extraction plant conditions over a range of operating parameters. The model has been used to develop an alternative control strategy which would make use of the KBS to allow more sophisticated control. The proposed strategy has a potential electrical energy saving of 20% compared with the present control philosophy. At current operational levels this equates to a saving in excess of 100k pounds sterling per annum.
The main aims of the work are:
1) To optimise the extraction rates to be consistent with effective, energy efficient operation;
2) To anticipate high demands on filtration plant by making appropriate preparations for increases in the dust loadings and/or extraction volumes as dictated by process demands;
3) To recognise and diagnose malfunctions through plant condition monitoring;
4) To provide direction for the maintenance function to achieve maximum plant availability;
5) To minimise pollution incidents caused by equipment failure.
