Control of noise emitted by large fans in the steel industry

Objectif

The aim of this work is to study the different ways to control the noise radiated by large industrial fans in the neighbourhood.

At the present time, noise produced by large fans in iron and steel industries is a problem that hasn't completely been solved.

In reality, it isn't so uncommon to find such large fans working without a noise dumping device and producing rather high noise levels in the neighbourhood. In addition, the emitted noise spectrum may contain tonal frequencies also named pure tones which are particularly disturbing.

Four different means may be used to achieve this goal:

- source noise reduction;
- noise reduction by dissipative techniques;
- noise reduction by reactive absorption techniques;
- noise reduction by active absorption techniques.

By studying these four means and comparing them objectively, it will be possible to develop a global protocol for limiting noise. The main advantage of this method is that it will be possible to propose the one or the few mixed solutions which will be the most suitable for each particular case, whether it is an existing machine or the plan of a new one.
