Automatic changing of work rolls in Sendzimir rolling mills

Objective

The objective of this research project is to design, construct and implement a robot system for automatic changing of work rolls in Sendzimir rolling mills.

Rolling is the main operation in the cold working of stainless steel. Cold rolling is a process which transforms metal into the form in which it is needed for further use.

The most common type of rolling mill for stainless steel is the Sendzimir system, a reversible mill the main features of which are as follows:

- the small diameter of the work rolls,
- the presence of 18 support rolls (9 at the top and 9 at the bottom)

The system requires considerable lubrication. The work rolls are changed after every coil.

This is a very delicate operation and is currently carried out by specialised workers who have to contend with hot oil fumes, difficult working conditions and other problems primarily associated with safety (protection of hands).

The solution adopted by the study group is the manufacture of a robot with four main components:

- an external trolley on rails with gantry
- a runner-carrying trolley sliding onto the above
- a case containing four runners attached to the runner-carrying trolley
- a roll-carrying trolley sliding into the runners.
