Objective
The aim of the project was to examine the performance of triggered barriers in controlling the propagation of explosions in mines, particularly in conjunction with mechanised drivage in blind ends.
The system studied (triggered barrier designed in Belgium) consists of a control device (sensor) capable of being activated by the thermal or mechanical effects of an explosion, a transmission line and extinguishing units (dispersers). The extinguishing agent is water.
The specific objectives of this study were to add to available knowledge concerning the variation in efficiency depending on explosion force (from the point of view of detection and suppression) and to establish modelling procedures with a view to expanding on the conclusions of the experiments and adapting them to real mine situations.
