Objective
The main objective of the project was to study the actual situation of underground mine atmosphere in the Spanish coal industry and the utilization of the necessary tools for environmental prevention and control. The project results would be a basic list of solutions and recommendations for environmental control and optimal selection of preventive strategies.
The project development has produced a better knowledge of the actual problems in relations with underground atmosphere in the Spanish coal mining industry, providing data and tools for its adequate control. The basis for the selection of adequate strategies and atmosphere control, alarm and actuation systems under most typical atmosphere related risks has been defined. The project results will contribute to improve the design of environmental control systems and procedures, adapted to each specific situation, thus reducing atmosphere related risks.
The Spanish underground coal mining shows a number of differences with the rest in Europe, due to the different geology, mining methods, and types of coal exploited. Even within Spain, very distinct mine types exist in the different coal fields distributed along the country. For this reason, and taking into account the higher incidence of atmosphere related accidents in Spain in comparison with other countries, a specific study about causes, risks, and the required correcting actions was necessary.
