Objective
The aims of the proposed work are to evaluate the evidence on possible human cancer risks in relation to exposure to diesel emissions, and to define and implement the lines of research most likely to be helpful in informing decisions on control measures.
The first stage will, 1 evaluate the evidence for carcinogenicity of diesel emissions in man; 2 evaluate available exposure - response information in man, animals and mutagenicity tests including theoretical synergistic effects between diesel and other particulates; 3 measure the chemical characteristics of particulate diesel emissions from engines designed for underground use and compare these with conventional engines; 4 review the above information and select from among the following lines of research a plan of work, for the second stage, most likely to inform helpfully decisions on control measures. The possible lines of research are: (a) assessment of instruments and methodology for measurement of airborne diesel particulates in the presence of airborne coal dust; (b) cell mutagenicity studies comparing the effects of emissions from underground, and conventional engines; (c) in vivo toxicological studies of possible synergism between diesel particulates and coalmine dust; (d) development of exposure-response models based on available data; (e) a study of the influence of exposure to diesel fumes on mortality of British coalminers, based on Pneumoconiosis Field Research data, and taking into account confounding factors including smoking and other relevant occupational exposure.
