Objective
The project will be used to apply and validate at the workplace the new version of the ECSC questionnaire on respiratory symptoms, together with simple and reliable respiratory function tests. This will make it possible to establish the incidence of respiratory disease in the various sectors of the steel plant and then to determine the diagnostic validity of the questionnaire itself.
The questionnaire will be used for approximately 8 000 workers in the steel industry and be filled in at the time of the routine annual preventive medical examination.
At the same time, functional respiratory tests will be carried out and, if necessary chest X-rays will be taken.
The results of the various test will be coded and recorded on computer for subsequent statistical study and analysis of the correlation between the different results obtained for each of the variables studied.
METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THESE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED
The analysis will be carried out by a Bull computer with an integrated statistical software package.
The relationship between the information collected with the aid of the questionnaire and the results of the functional tests will be studied by the "proportion of incidence" method; which is analogous to the "relative risk" method used for studies of cohorts.
The Kappa statistical test will be used to measure the consistency between the two observers.
To simplify the study, the quantitative variables will be broken down into categories.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
