The task will start with an Overview of all relevant segments of the rail freight market its characteristics and technical and logistical challenges. Thus all areas in the transport market that could be relevant for freight rail business will be investigated: - Single wagonload transport in general - General cargo/part loads - Intermodal transport/transport of containers and swap bodies - Reefer transports - Express/overnight transport - Transport of heavy goods - Bulk transport. - Transport of dangerous goods The investigation will focus on the technical and logistical requirements that must be fulfilled for being competitive in land-based transport. The dialogue with decision-makers in the relevant segments will be conducted to enable the refinement of the market requirements. The recognitions of the SMARTRAIL project will be integrated and its stakeholders shall be used for the validation of the outcome of the task.
