Periodic Reporting for period 2 - FED4SAE (Federated CPS Digital Innovation Hubs for the Smart Anything Everywhere Initiative)

FED4SAE overall objective is to boost and sustain the digitization of the European industry in strengthening the European competitiveness in the CPS & Embedded system market by lowering both the technical and business barriers for innovative companies: To bring innovative CPS technologies to business from any sector; To link companies to suppliers across value-chains and regions in order to create innovative CPS solutions; To link companies to investors across value-chains and regions in order to accelerate CPS solutions development and industrialization; To ensure the sustainability of pan-European DIH network.
To that end, FED4SAE has set a pan European network of 8 multidisciplinary DIHs which offer a unique marketplace of components, industrial platforms, technical expertise and innovation services. It operates in one stop-shop mode for the benefit of companies to drive disruptive AEs towards new product development by providing end-to-end services and all the necessary expertise and competencies, by easing access to leading edge industrial technology platforms and research institutes advanced technologies, by providing help with business and market analysis and guidance from concept through market release, including assistance with funding. It will link the companies to local innovation hubs across value-chains and across European smart specialisation region, building up FED4SAE community of CPS innovation stakeholders. It will connect the DIHs with the relevant stakeholders (business, innovation centres, and investors) of their local ecosystems, to pave the way towards long-term sustainability of the DIHs and network.
To feed the DIH cooperation model, FED4SAE will support and AEs considering their excellence, their impact on the ecosystem, their industrialization implementation possibility and prospects and their foreseen business model through three open calls. The AE targeted products are designed, constructed and built on the industrial platforms proposed in the frame of FED4SAE, the AE innovation challenge is supported by the advanced platforms which bring expertise & know-how, advanced technologies and testbed facilities, relevant conditions for innovation adoption and access to further investment is ensured by collaboration work with the innovation management partner on the business case
At least 30 funded AEs are expected for developing innovative CPS & Embedded systems products with cross-border collaborations with ten success stories with short path to the market.
• 3 open calls set-up, evaluation & selection of 32 cross-border application experiments - AE- (116 submissions), from 13 countries addressing Education, Energy, Entertainment, Environmental, Healthcare, Industry 4.0 Smart Cities and transportations
• Coaching of the 32 AEs: technical expertise & business/innovation management support, up to every project ending and closure meeting.
• Active participation to SAE 4 collaborative workshops (02/04/2020, 07/07/2020, 26/10/2020 am & pm) and events set-up by Smart4europe2 and SAE IAS.
• Continuous sharing of posts through the social media: 244 posts on Facebook, 395 followers on twitter and 252 posts on Linkedin.
• 32 updated flyers, 17 success stories to promote interesting and promising AEs (technical achievement, innovation management progress and business/go-to-market status).
• Redesign of the website to highlight FED4SAE outcomes, services (Access to funding, DIH, technical expertise, innovation management & business support) and ecosystem.
• 2 articles in HIPEAC news edition (n°59 &n°60) to highlight the MAMMUT project (About e-revolution starting with smart monitoring for electrical motorcycle) and SPECTROX & EMBRACE projects (About engine for health care innovation),
• 5 press release with one final press release to promote FED4SAE outcomes.
• Organization of FED4SAE IoT European Show in London (10-11/02/2020), 71 participants and 12 FED4SAE SMEs.
• 4 FED4SAE companies applied to “UnitedAgainstCOVID19” call in March 2020 with the support of the Health technologies assessment authorities; 2 were identified as very promising companies for the matter of disinfection. They were both introduced to Health Authorities during an online meeting (4 June 2020) and thus entered in the radar of companies to accelerate their access to market with regulation compliance. They were both finalist and were invited to take part to the “UnitedAgainstCOVID19” presentation in the scope of the IMPACT week (26 June 2020).
• INPHO Venture Summit in the 2018 & 2020 editions, participation to 2020 SAE contest award organized by Smart4Europe2, 4 FED4SAE companies candidate and Protolab awareded the 1st price with the project EMBRACE - a pool of business angels have acknowledged the quality of the value proposition.
• Organization of 3 technical webinars with FED4SAE industrial partners, available on line: INTEL, ST, and THALES, webinar set-up with AVL planned for April 2021.
• Organization of FED4SAE Innovation club launch day (21/01/2021): 258 participants, investors’ reverse pitching session, 2 interactive workshops by INTEL (presentation of Intel® Ignite startup growth program) and THALES, 1 matchmaking session offering pitch opportunity, launch of BLU FED4SAE App for ecosystem networking.
Wide-ranging communications activities -open calls/brokerage events/information workshops/webinars: over 3,000 companies aware of FED4SAE, 168 SMEs registered on the open call portal, 116 proposals submitted from 34 European countries, 32 granted cross-border AEs (13 countries).
Direct support to the 32 companies to create an array of prototypes and innovative products increasing the competitiveness of European innovators in the CPS/embedded system markets, contributing to the DIH expansion across Europe.
Translation of the broad range of industrial platforms, advanced technologies & testbeds offered by FED4SAE into a wide range of targeted technical fields & application domains in the funded AEs: from computer vision, machine learning, virtual reality and AI to smart sensors, and audio processing; identification of over 30 different technology uses.
Deployment of marketing efforts by all companies to identify partners, or initiate contacts with customers. Intensification of support to fundraising with 2 organized events: London (02/2020) where 12 companies had the opportunity to pitch, and the INPHO Venture summit -online event (10/2020)- where more companies were introduced to investors (SAE contest award won by Protolab).
41% of the granted companies already achieved customer sampling or actual sales, 37% managed to sample to customers, 78% have potential to reach 20 M€ in annual recurring revenue within the next 3 to 5 years and create at least 200 jobs. Overall success in commercialization reaches 41% with a potential to reach +37% within the next 2 years.
Build FED4SAE network sustainability to further showcase the value of CPS to encourage its adoption while opening its ecosystem and joining forces with other initiatives to support European SMEs digitization: design to operate via a light organization, act as a Club operated via a community App contributing to structuring collaborations & the innovation value chain, operate under Bartel Deal business model, MoU to keep the ecosystem active. Launch of FEDSAE Innovation Club: 21/01/2021, 258 participants with diverse profiles including start-ups, SMEs, public & private funding players.
