Management Issues in a Distributed Ada Programming Support Environment

Objective

This study project examined some of the management issues which will arise in the design and use of a distributed Ada Programming Support Environment (APSE).

The final report addresses the following issues:
- Configuration management systems in a distributed Ada development environment;
- Elaboration of the features of a full-scale distributed Ada Project Support Environment (APSE) and validation of the interfaces of the Portable Common Tools Environment (PCTE);
- Resource localization;
- Management problems associated with distributed environments and techniques for solving them.
Some of the ideas developed during this project have been used during the definition of PCTE+ (a further evolution of PCTE). The ideas on configuration management have been used in the development of configuration management packages in the PACT project and in commercial products under development at GEC-Marconi.
