Objective
This project aimed at making a formal definition of Ada as it is described in the Ada Language Reference Manual and pointing out residual inconsistencies and ambiguities in the narrative description. This definition has been supplemented by various explanatory documents, while all ambiguities found have been reported to the groups responsible for the maintenance of the Ada standard.
The project results have generated great interest in the topic (and in the US as well) but is seems to be unrealistic to expect that a formal definition will replace, in the short or medium term, the narrative text that is now the basis for the Ada standard. The project results have been presented in numerous technical reports and articles in the specialized journals. They were also presented, by one of the project partners, during a one-week workshop and discussions with a publisher are underway to produce a book out of the material made available by the project.
Beside providing a draft formal definition for Ada, the project was also successful in validating the methods used (VDM for the static aspects of the language, complemented by the SMoLCS approach for the definition of the dynamic aspects).
