Variable Compression Ratio System for the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in motor vehicles

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - GOMECSYS VCR system (Variable Compression Ratio System for the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in motor vehicles)

Reporting period: 2017-08-01 to 2017-11-30

Climate change affects people all around the world. Legislation to limit CO2 emissions in the automotive industry is expected to become more and more stringent, in line with the Paris Climate Accord (2015).
Variable Combustion Ratio (VCR) is a promising technology that can allow significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Its implementation, however, has been hindered by elevated costs related to requiring important changes in the engine architecture.
With the Gomecsys VCR System we will be able to provide a major CO2 emission reduction (up to 10%) by simply replacing the crankshaft of the original engine by a VCR crankshaft.
1. We have identified the major technical aspects to be carried out and elaborated a work plan and budget. A technical risk assessment has been included, implementing the mitigation measures in the work plan. Various sources for funding have been presented.
2. The Freedom to Operate was ensured by studying the different VCR technologies patented. We have found that there is no similar technology to ours. We have a large number of patents protecting our know-how, which defines the design of the IPR strategy for Phase 2.
3. Market quantification: Total Available Market, Serviceable Available Market and Serviceable Obtainable Market. Its global geographic characteristics, segments and targeted end-users have been studied. We have analysed the competition, which is limited, and presented our pricing strategy based on license fees. The market barriers and the commercial risks are presented, implementing the mitigation measures in a commercial work package. We present the exploitation strategy based on strategic partnerships in the automotive industry supported by our analysis of the current status of our collaborations.
4. Evaluation of various scenarios for sales projections: conservative and realistic. These scenarios show that we will be able to partially fund our future R&D and commercial endeavours by ourselves.
The current VCR technology involves a completely different design of the engine. The Gomecsys VCR System affects the crankshaft exclusively, making implementation of this technology as simple as changing this part in any type of engine.
CO2 emissions can be reduced by as much as 10%, affecting also fuel economy directly. This would have a large impact on the climate, also allowing OEMs to save €1,500 million/year. In the EU, in particular, it would contribute significantly to fuel security and independence.
