Objective
The aim of the proposed expert system is to assist searches in agricultural literature and research project databases and to prepare a search profile optimized for the database and host computer.
An expert system is being developed to assist searches of agricultural literature and research project databases and to prepare a search profile optimized for the database and host computer.
The first version of a prototype expert system has been presented which demonstrates, for a small subject area, that retrieval can be provided by the system. The focus of a second prototype is the test of the feasibility of the struture outline of the knowledge bases and this is progressing on schedule. A local database is under development which will act as a users' individual database and assist in finding relevant search terms in literature citations. Restructuring of the CABI Thesaurus, according to an agreed classification outline, is halfway through.
The query formulated by the database user will be analysed with the aid of an expert system using expert knowledge stored in the computer. Expert knowledge will be represented by agricultural databases or parts therefrom, by thesauri, special vocabularies, classification schemes or subject categories. The programm will help to find the database(s) most suitable for the query formulated and will define the optimum search strategy. The search profile will then be formulated in the host-specific query language.
It is not proposed that the expert system be used only for conducting on-line research. Where telecommunication facilities are inadequate or unavailable, agricultural database searches can be done on CDROM. Later integration of an "intelligent interface" is intended. The results of a search will be stored in the local database. Provision of this facility will require the development of a database management system to be prepared or the adaptation of a commercial one. The user interface for the system must be simple to operate. Easy access to databases will enable agricultural scientists and advisers to carry out projects more effectively, creating improvements in competitiveness and in the management of agricultural resources.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
