Digital Resonant Laser Printing for Mass Customization of Flat Optics

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - DeLight (Digital Resonant Laser Printing for Mass Customization of Flat Optics)

Reporting period: 2018-08-01 to 2020-01-31

The objective of the DeLight project is to transform the ultra-high-resolution laser printing of flat optical elements, developed by DTU in FET OPEN ChromaVision, into a commercially attractive and sustainable, flexible production of flat optics, that is highly competitive in the global market.

The specific objectives of the DeLight proposal are chosen, with aim to prepare and identify the best path to create a sustainable business of the technology: IP and technology review, identify the market segments and needs, identify competing technologies and players, assess technology with end users, and establish and initiate a University Spin-off.

We have successfully reached all our objectives, we set up in the DeLight project.
DTU has secured it’s IP by filing 2 international patent applications on the technology. In the DeLight project a comprehensive IP and technology review was performed.
We approached eight companies in various market segments in order to gauge their level of interest. From these interactions, we identified prescription lenses as the most attractive market for our technology.
Prototyping activities were initiated, to assess the DeLight technology’s capability to meet the requirements for prescription lenses.
In parallel with the activities above, a business plan was formulated and continuously updated in reflecting the generated knowledge.
Business plan: We have identified a very attractive market for our technology: The market for prescription eyeglass lenses and we believe that we will be able to disrupt this market by out value proposals. This will change the value chain completely by moving the final manufacturing of the prescription lens into the optician’s shop. The new value chain will create good jobs in local communities, which is important for society.

Technical results: We have clarified the technical roadblocks, that we need to overcome, and we have through our own research and dialogue with relevant companies described a realistic path forward for.

Team: The execution of the DeLight project led us to enhance our team with a member, who has deep knowledge about the market we plan to enter, the prescription eyeglass lens market. Our team proved our capability by winning the Excellent Science category of the H2020 Innovation Radar Prize in 2018 with our business plan.
