"Actually, there is a big need for connecting small airports in remote areas. However, today, no affordable solution is actually available due to the high cost per seats due to current available small aircraft.
Thus, a reduction of operating cost of small aircraft (up to 19 seats) will open the market, and will contribute to improve mobility in Europe, connecting small cities and helping to reduce flight time, matching the FlightPath 2050 ""d2d 4h"" challenge.

The work performed can be divided into three main packages:
1) Management: in cooperation with other ITDs (AIR, ENGINE, SYS and TE) the coordination, driving and monitoring of the technical functions of the Transversal Activities has been carried out, by means of SAT TA CCM (SAT Transversal Activity Coordination Committee). One of the main point was the implementation of CfPs related to the SAT activities in order to harmonize and have a high-level budget control.
2) Reference and Green Aircraft: both the 19 seats reference and Green Loop1 configurations have been defined. In particular, the reference aircraft has been derived by considering 2015 technology, while the design of the Green aircraft was performed considering the main outputs of the Technologies improvement to be achieved in CS2 ITDs. Deliverable D-2.2.1 containing the basic characteristics and performances of the Green SAT aircraft for Loop 1 was issued on November 20th 2018.
Finally, a LCC (Life-Cycle Cost) for the Green SAT aircraft for Loop 1 has been derived as input to TE for small commuter regional transport.
3) Advanced Integration of Airframe, Engine and Systems: preliminary integration studies of technologies developed within Airframe, Engine and Systems ITDs on 19-seats Green Loop1 aircraft configuration have been carried out to support the definition of the targets for the 19-seats Green Loop1 aircraft configuration and to evaluate the technologies at aircraft integration level.
SAT TA will address market innovations able to reduce small aircraft operational cost and environmental impact, ensuring good levels of operational safety.
In particular, the following technologies will be addressed:
1) Low cost composite wing box and engine nacelle using OoA (Out of Autoclave) technology, LRI (Liquid Resin Infusion) and advance automation process.
2) Innovative high lift devices, able to allow aircraft operations from short airfields (<800m).
3) Affordable small aircraft manufacturing of metallic fuselage by means of FSW (Friction Stir Welding) and LMD (Laser Metal Deposition).
4) Affordable fly-by-wire architecture for small aircraft (CS23 certification rules).
5) More electric systems replacing pneumatic and hydraulic aircraft systems (high voltage EPGDS -Electrical Power Generation and Distribution System-, hybrid de-ice system, landing gear and brakes).
6) Advanced avionics for small aircraft, to reduce pilot workload, paving single pilot operations for 19 seats.
7) Advanced cabin comfort with new interiors materials and more comfortable seats.
8) New generation of turboprop engine with reduced fuel consumption, emissions, noise and maintenance costs for 19 seats aircraft.
9) Alternative diesel engine option for small 9 seats commuter aircraft.
19 seats Green Loop 1 configuration
