Gamut mapping technology based on vision models

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - GAMMAVISION (Gamut mapping technology based on vision models)

Période du rapport: 2018-08-01 au 2020-01-31

Gamut mapping is the problem of transforming the colors of image or video content so as to fully exploit the color palette of the display device where the content will be shown, while preserving the artistic intent of the original content's creator. In particular in the cinema industry, the rapid advancement in display technologies has created a pressing need to develop automatic and fast gamut mapping algorithms. In this project we have developed a novel framework that is based on vision science models, performs both gamut reduction and gamut extension, is of low computational complexity, produces results that are free from artifacts and outperforms state-of-the-art methods, as validated by cinema professionals through observer preference tests. The project's communication and dissemination included the organization of two workshops with top companies in the film and TV industries, and attending some of the most important trade-shows and industry fairs. The project has yielded a publication in a top-ranking computer vision journal, a European Patent application, a website and a post-production software plug-in with which to test our method. Our framework has raised the interest of a number of top-companies in the industry, and has led to the creation of a spin-out company based in Spain.
