Objetivo The overall objective of the SP3D proposal is to study both seismic wave propagation and postseismic deformation in volcanic areas by applying and developing innovative computational resources. In particular, the attention of SP3D focuses on the Vesuvius and M. Etna regions, that represent important challenges for volcanic hazard. In these areas, the topographical and tomographic heterogeneities affect considerably the seismic deformation field. It is therefore expected that the hazard evaluation and monito ring of the volcanic activity would be greatly improved, if an algorithm, capable of taking into account rigorously such heterogeneities, is used to model and interpret seismic observations. In this sense, the Spectral Element Method, implemented by D. Komatitsch and J. Tromp on a "Beowulf" computer at Caltech, is an exceptional tool: it accurately incorporates effects due, for example, to velocity and density heterogeneities, anisotropy, inelasticity, layer thickness variations, topography, without intrinsic restrictions. Recent researches showed that great earthquakes could affect the activity of a volcano. Taking advantage of the SEM experience, SP3D involves the analysis of earthquake/volcano interactions, with the development of a new, fully 3D, global postseismic deformations model. SP3D will give E. Casarotti the opportunity to work, at Caltech, with the group that first applied SEM to seismological problems. The researcher will acquire world-level expertise in SEM, and in general about parallel numerical implementations on supercomputing facilities (e.g. "Beowulf" clusters). The implementation of numerical calculations is likely to lead to major breakthroughs in the near future. Theoretical understanding of numerical methods, and practical knowledge o f supercomputing calculus strategies, will provide the researcher with the background he needs to pursue an independent research career. Therefore, SP3D obviously matches the aims of the Marie-Curie OIF.
