Unleash the potential of CSAs results to contribute to sustainable and competitive Bio-Based Industries in Europe

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - LIFT (Unleash the potential of CSAs results to contribute to sustainable and competitive Bio-Based Industries in Europe)

Période du rapport: 2019-05-01 au 2020-04-30

Despite the considerable amount of high-quality knowledge generated by the CSAs in the different programmes, a global, integrated and structured vision of their results is missing. CSAs outputs are often not easily available, neither integrated among CSAs, nor transparent and promoted among the stakeholders. Especially for the Bio-based industries it is not easy to directly profit, or even be aware, of the CSAs results and therefore to appreciate the added value of this type of projects for their business. Moreover, to create a coherent and stimulating ‘environment’ for a sustainable bio-based industry in Europe, better knowledge circulation and collaboration among CSAs, funded under different programmes and the scientific community, investors, trade unions and civil society, represented in the Quadruple Helix should be encouraged to provide a global picture, maximise the impact of CSAs results and provide an integrated overview of gaps that should be addressed, providing evidence-based recommendations for the incoming calls.
Therefore, to ensure that all relevant bioeconomy stakeholders (policy-makers, business, investors the scientific community and others) are put in a better position to ensure a sustainable, strong and competitive bio-based industry in Europe, better knowledge access and circulation of results from past CSA projects, as well as increased cooperation between CSAs is needed, to the benefit of the bio-based industries at the regional, national and European level.

Knowledge circulation and collaboration among CSAs, funded under different programmes and the scientific community, investors, trade unions and civil society, represented in the Quadruple Helix should be encouraged to provide a global picture, maximise the impact of CSAs results and provide an integrated overview of gaps that should be addressed providing evidence-based recommendations for the incoming calls.

To address the above-mentioned challenge, LIFT will maximise the impact of CSA by valorising their outcomes and promoting the collaboration among them, aiming at identifying gaps to be addressed to ensure a stimulating environment boosting the Bio-Based economy, through the following strategic objectives:
OBJ1: Provide a global vision of objectives and results of past and ongoing Coordination and Support Actions (CSA)
OBJ2: Maximise the impact of CSAs results, making them readily available, integrated and especially actionable by industries and policy makers.
OBJ3: Analyse the existing gaps and identify the challenges to be addressed, through a multistakeholders’ collaboration
OBJ4: Raise awareness and communicate the CSAs’ contribution in addressing the Bioeconomy related challenges
OBJ5: Provide actionable recommendations and suggestions for future programming activities in the field of bio-based industries, contributing to the creation of a stimulating environment for sustainable, strong and competitive bio-based industry in Europe
- Through Internet search and >40 (mainly unique) interviews the knowledge deriving from >60 past and ongoing coordination and support actions (CSAs) and similar activities in other projects (such as research and innovation actions - RIAs or Interreg projects) was mapped and synthesised in (a) a report and (b) in 11 topical factsheets.
- For 11 topical categories gaps in research programming vis-à-vis the corresponding objectives and measures in BS and SIRA were identified through desk research, interviews with project representatives and stakeholder feedback collected at the 2019 BBI JU Stakeholder Forum. The results were detailed in (a) a report and (b) in updated versions of the 11 topical factsheets.
- Organisation of:
• 1st MML workshop (originally foreseen in T3.3) in the context of the BBI JU Stakeholder Forum (3 December 2019)
• 2ndMML workshop (originally foreseen in T3.3) with industrial experts (2 April 2020)
• 3rdonline MML workshops (replacing the final event in T4.3b) “Shaping the innovation ecosystem for the bioeconomy”. 4 online webinars (March and April 2020)
• 4thonline MML: Informal debate with representatives of BBI JU funded CSAs projects
(29 April 2020)
- LIFT online library to make available in a transparent, readily available and user friendly (https://www.bioeconomy-library.eu/)
- A set of recommendations and suggestions for new CSA projects topics was produced
Dissemination
- 2 Newsletters were designed and issued in 27th April 2020 and 30th April 2020
- Social networks
The social media networks for LIFT are Twitter and LinkedIn. They were set up and seen as being the best channels based on the amount of interesting information that can be shared. It is considered a bad practice to have social networks with low content and not-regular updates. Therefore, these social networks were created in July 2019. An overview of the analytics and performance of these social networks are presented next (until April 2020).
