Passive Isolation Condenser

Project description

A completely passive isolation condenser system

The new generations of fission nuclear reactors are facing the challenges of sustainability and safety. There’s a need for scientists to provide technological solutions that are reliable and efficient. In this context, the EU-funded PIACE project is developing an innovative decay heat removal system for nuclear reactors. This system is based on an isolation condenser with non-condensable gases. The aim is to manage the variable decay heat in a passive manner. As such, PIACE’s innovative concept is designed to be completely passive and to be flexible enough to adapt to both liquid metal and water-cooled reactors.

Objective

PIACE has the main objective to support the technology transfer from the research to industry in the area of safety of nuclear installations. An Innovative Decay Heat Removal System for nuclear reactors, presently under technology validation in relevant environment (SIRIO facility), will be scaled-up to achieve a system prototype demonstration in operational environment, relevant for LFRs/ADSs and LWRs.
