Periodic Reporting for period 2 - ATTEST (Advanced Tools Towards cost-efficient decarbonisation of future reliable Energy SysTems)
Reporting period: 2021-09-01 to 2023-08-31
The consortium, from six EU countries, that has been assembled to deliver ATTEST consists of five highly experienced research organisations in the energy systems area, two utilities that manage and operate the transmission system and the distribution system in Croatia, and two industry partners that specialise in the development of advanced ICT solutions and SCADA systems.The development of this broad spectrum of energy-related ICT tools and the utilization of next generation algorithms, demonstrated in a real world environment has not been attempted before.
The outputs from the ATTEST project will enable accelerated dissemination, by a wide range of research institutions, within and outside of the project consortium, of the tools that will help TSOs and DSOs to better manage their networks.
The demonstration of the results of the project will be valuable for the scientific community and EU energy industry and attest to the relevance of the solutions developed.
The work related with the development of the tools for the ATTEST platform started right after WP2, in M4. This included WP3 (planning tools), WP4 (operation tools) and WP5 (asset management tools). In the end of the 1st reporting period all the tasks of these WPs were ongoing.
WP6, which is related with the development and implementation of the ICT platform, also started in M4 and ran in parallel with WPs 3, 4 and 5, to assure compatibility and a smooth integration of all the tools in the platform.
WP1 and WP8, management and dissemination/communication/exploitation work packages, have the duration of the entire project and ran as planned in the Grant Agreement.
The core work carried out in the 2nd reporting period can be divided into four phases:
1. In the first phase, the work focused on concluding the individual tools. The tools were divided into three sets, each related to a specific WP: planning (WP3), operation (WP4) and asset management (WP5). All tools have been developed and tested successfully.
2. The second phase was the development of the ATTEST ICT platform, which has all the tools developed in WP3, WP4 and WP5 seamlessly integrated. The work was developed in WP6. The platform was successfully developed and all the tools were effectively integrated.
3. The third phase was related to the replication of the ICT platform in the demonstrator and its connection to the Croatian DSO and TSO databases, seeking to ensure that some tools could be tested with real-time data (WP7). This phase did not go exactly as planned. Implementing the platform and connecting to external databases consumed more time and resources than initially anticipated. Consequently, only the network of Koprivnica and surrounding areas were integrated in the demonstration (Zagreb and Northwestern Croatia networks were not integrated). There were also several other technical impediments related to the secure operation of the networks involved in the demonstration, which made it impossible to directly control some of the flexible assets through the platform. Therefore, the consortium was only authorised to provide the results of the tools to the network operators in a decision-support fashion. The biggest gains from this stage were the integration of real-time network data into the platform and the demonstration that some of the tools developed can actually work in real configuration. The biggest shortcoming was the failure to directly control some of the network assets.
4. The fourth and final phase was dedicated to calculating the ATTEST KPIs (WP7). Again, due to the time required to run all the tools for all the defined scenarios, it was not possible to simulate all the distribution networks initially characterized in WP2. A selection of the most representative networks was made, resulting in the selection of a distribution network per country that was used in the simulations carried out.
WP1, management WP, has the duration of the entire project and ran as planned in the Grant Agreement. Several online meetings were held, some at the consortium level with all the partners and other focused on specific WPs, with only the involved partners. In addition, 3 face-to-face meetings of the consortium were held to discuss pressing management, technical and dissemination matters:
- September 2022 in Porto, Portugal;
- April 2023 in Zagreb, Croatia;
- August 2023 in Belval, Luxembourg.
WP8, the dissemination/communication/exploitation WP, also has the duration of the entire project and ran as planned in the Grant Agreement. The main activities were related to the public dissemination and communication of the tools, networks and scenarios, through scientific publications in journals and conferences and videos and their storage in public repositories, such as:
- ATTEST website: https://attest-project.eu/
- INESC TEC repository: https://rdm.inesctec.pt/
- Zenodo: https://zenodo.org/communities/attest-eu/?q=&l=list&p=1&s=10&sort=newest
- GitHub: https://github.com/ATTEST-project
- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@attestenergy5009
Other dissemination activities were also carried out, such as continuous updating of social networks and participation in webinars and fairs and other events.
The exploitation activities were related to the future exploitation of the ATTEST tools and platform, which were released under the terms of the European Union Public Licence v1.2 as published by the European Union.
