Project description
New baby mattress to sleep like a baby
For new parents, sleep deprivation is nothing to yawn at. The first six months after a baby is born can be tough. Studies show parental sleep satisfaction and sleep duration sharply decline after childbirth, hitting their lowest point when a baby is three months old. The EU-funded SensoDream project is developing a special baby mattress. Equipped with sensors to monitor humidity, pressure and temperature, it includes a smart app that can notify parents when the baby’s diaper needs changing. Impressive is the data processing unit that can analyse and detect poor sleep to provide suitable recommendations.
Objective
Sleeping, the worry that is even greater than baby feeding and recovery from birth. Frequently, new parents have to wake up during the night and go to the cradle reducing drastically their necessary sleep time. This is not an anxious behaviour and is fully justified since i.e. a good sleep is essential for a proper brain development and babies with more efficient night time sleep had higher cognitive scores. Besides, babies that sleep better have an “easier” temperament, being more sociable and approachable. Moreover, several studies have shown that babies that get less sleep gain more fat as infants and are at higher risk of being overweight. On the other hand, sleep is also fundamental for parents. When infants don’t sleep, their parents do not either and mothers of babies with sleep problems are at higher risk of postpartum depression. New technologies are required to both provide a comprehensive online monitoring of the baby including warning and alerts and perform a deep and reliable analysis of his/her sleep data aiming to find if there is a poor baby sleep and find the real causes for it. These technologies are needed to guarantee babies and parents’ health, set up healthy sleeping routines and provide peace of mind to parents. SensoDream is an Ecus® mattress specially designed for the baby comfort and health that also incorporates numerous different types of sensors (humidity, pressure, temperature, etc.) and a data processing unit (electronic hub). It also includes a smart app for baby sleep monitoring and analysis. SensoDream monitors the baby sleep, presents warnings and alarms (i.e. the child is excessively wrapped, wet diaper etc.), performs data analysis and detects poor sleep and its causes providing recommendations.
