Project description
Optimising research collaboration with CIS countries
Staff exchanges and collaborative research and training between universities and research organisations from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan is the goal of the EU-funded SOMPATY project. It will boost research ties between Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS was established at the end of 1991, in the wake of the end of the USSR). The research institutes participating in this project boast a strong research focus on spectral optimisation and its applications in nano-technology, life sciences, and quantum mechanics. Between 2020 and 2024, four project events (one per year) have been scheduled. Each includes a workshop, summer school, open access proceedings and public outreach activities.
Objective
The aim of the proposed project SOMPATY is to strengthen the European research ties to CIS countries in Asia Minor, Central Asia, and (initially also to the European CIS country Belarus). The Participation of Belarussian Partner Organisations was terminated in March 2022 due to restrictive measures againt Belarus taken by the EU.
SOMPATY focuses on an intensive staff exchange, which will lead to collaborative research and training between universities and research organizations from: Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Germany, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. All participating institutions have a strong research focus on spectral optimization and its applications to nano-technology, life sciences, and quantum mechanics. The core research task is organized in four Work Packages. Additionally there will be a Work Package devoted to training, dissemination and communication and a Work Package for the over all project management.
Four eminent project events (one per year) are scheduled. Each includes a scientific workshop, a summer school, proceedings in open access format, and public outreach activities in Tashkent (2021), Almaty (2022) and in Baku (2023). The Academy of Sciences, Kyiv, as the recently associated EU country Ukraine will serve as a hub.
