Project description
Fishing for a healthier aquaculture industry
The European Union is home to some 12 500 aquaculture enterprises, mostly microbusinesses employing less than 10 employees. While EU production has increased by 2.2 % yearly in volume between 2014 and 2016, and 3.1 % in value, aquaculture is stagnating compared to global production rates. The aim of the ALGABOOSTER project is to help make the European aquaculture sector competitive and sustainable. Their advanced aquafeed enriched with a marine microalgae immunostimulant complex will boost fish immune system and growth as well as buffer the effects of stress, all in a natural way. It has been scientifically tested and guarantees significant reduction in mortality rates. ALGABOOSTER has also demonstrated a substantial increase in the final product quality.
Objective
The EU aquaculture sector is of high importance for the EU economy. However, EU aquaculture producers lag behind the
global competitors that offer cheap products of much lower production costs and quality standards. In order to support EU
producers in this highly competitive market, it is crucial to address their production inefficiencies: 20% mortality rates and
long growth periods. The current solutions, namely use of antibiotics for mortality reduction and aquafeed with incorporated
fishmeal and fish oil for improved growth, are inefficient, costly and extremely unsustainable. Consequently, there is a high
need in the EU aquaculture sector for alternatives that can improve production efficiency in a sustainable, environmentallyfriendly
and antibiotic-free manner.
In this context, and basing on the excellent properties of marine microalgae, we have developed ALGABOOSTER -
advanced aquafeed enriched with marine microalgae immunostimulant complex to boost fish immune system and growth as
well as buffer the effects of stress, all in a natural way.
The Unique Selling Points of ALGABOOSTER are:
(i) whole-cell microalgae complex of high purity biomass of three marine microalgae species,
(ii) perfectly-preserved microalgae ingredient ensuring thanks to a novel microencausulation process ensuring premium quality product,
(iii) safe in use as the functional ingredient is incorporated into aquafeed (no risk of overdose),
(iv) 100% non-animal and sustainably sourced (no fishmeal, no fish oil),
(v) adjusted to support normal feed in two growth stages
Our product has been scientifically tested and guarantees significant reduction in mortality rates and growth cycle duration
as well as a substantial increase in quality of the final product. Via ALGABOOSTER´s administration, the production
efficiency is enhanced, and aquaculture producers obtain a revolutionary increase in their profit margins.
