Unique stand-alone software based on mesh morphing technology for fast and accurate Computer Aided Engineering to develop safer and greener products.

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - RBF2CAD (Unique stand-alone software based on mesh morphing technology for fast and accurate Computer Aided Engineering to develop safer and greener products.)

Reporting period: 2020-01-01 to 2020-04-30

Mesh morphing is an efficient approach for components design optimization. It can be used for different purposes: create shape parameters (i.e. change a length, an angle a thickness), move onto a new known shape, move onto a shape predicted, and support the multi-physics analysis.
Thanks to the mesh morphing approach, structural and mechanical components are easily optimized, allowing a saving of time and cost for designers and, at the same time, better performance in terms of materials waste reduction, energy efficiency, fluid-dynamics features, etc. This leads to more efficient manufacturing procedures for a large number of industrial sectors, such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical devices and industrial equipment.

RBF2CAD is a unique stand-alone software for mesh morphing to be linked with any solvers. This technology can solve several issues such as:
-) Insufficient time or resource to produce design iterations
-) Difficulty to maintain high-quality meshes and solutions for arbitrary geometry changes
-) Mistakes made by switching between different design systems
-) Issues with automated meshing of parametric geometry in optimization workflows
-) Parametric geometry set-up, which is a complex and demanding task
-) Re-meshing noise.

The application of RBF2CAD will allow the designers to solve complex optimization problems and improve their components performance.
Thanks to the Phase 1 project, a complete technical and economic feasibility study has been performed to confirm RBF2CAD technology potentiality, the market size and the financial needs.
The study is divided into two sections:
-) Technical Feasibility Study – main results are the definition of the development path for the new stand-alone tool to be integrated in any solver, the selection of pilot tests to be performed with the collaboration of key customers and needed to validate the solution, the delivering of a complete risk analysis.
-) Business Feasibility Study - a detailed market survey has been made to verify the market dimension and quantify the market potential, customers and key partners have been met and involved in the initiative, the business model for market uptake has been selected, the business plan and go-to-market strategy have been delivered, together with the IPR strategy.
RBF2CAD is the first solver agnostic industrial software based on Radial Basis Functions mesh morphing, which is recognized as the best mesh morphing method by the scientific community. RBF solver is capable to tackle large industrial problems in a very short time, and with an unparalleled reliability and precision. Its potentiality is huge and its integration in the industrial design procedures will allow an improvement of manufacturing efficiency in terms of materials use, energy efficiency and performance of components produced.

Next steps in the RBF2CAD development path are:
-) performing a full-scale validation campaign to demonstrate the performance, reliability and easy to use
-) promoting RBF2CAD validation results, with the scope to start-up the commercialization phase.
