Work progress and achievements during the period February 01, 2017-January 31, 2018 Goals and key milestones: a) Construction of VLP–based drug delivery systems. b) Investigating the MRI enhancement and controlled release behavior of VLP–based DDSs. c) Preparing research articles and applying patents based on the results discovered. d) Conferences attendance. e) Outreach activities. f) Knowledge transfer.
The research has progressed based on the schedule (see below).
a) VLP-based drug delivery carriers were constructed via the self-assembly of polyferrocenylsilane-based copolymers (PFSs) containing hydrophilic functional groups and hydrophilic biomacromolecules, which include polysaccharides, amino acid, and proteins. Besides, the mechanism of the assembly process was elucidated. On this basis, several hydrophobic drugs were encapsulated into the carriers.
b) The MRI enhancement capability and controlled release hehavior of VLP-based DDS were investigated systematically.
c) The results as above have been drafted three papers, which have been published repectively in Nature Communications, Acta Biomaterialia, and Chinese Journal of Polymer Science during the project period. The papaers are listed as follows.

d) The fellow attended three conferences during the period of the project, which include the Self-Assembly & Supramolecular Chemistry Gordon Research Conference (GRC), Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) and Polymer Conference of China, and were elected as a discussion leader in the GRS.
e) Outreach activities as follow have been taken by the fellow. (i) Dr. Dou participated in teaching a postgraduate course on "Supramolecular Materials and Biomedical Applications" in November 2017 at SJTU, the course was taught in English and covered both native and oversea students. (ii) Dr. Dou joined the “2017 Shanghai Conference on Scientific Research and Innovation in Europe” on Nov. 30, 2017, and communicated with some EU staffs and scientists for further project application and research collaboration. (iii) The paper published in Nature Communications was reported by several Chinese medias, the links are listed as follows:
f) Knowledge transfer: During the period of the project, knowledge of PFS copolymer synthesis and protocell preparation has been transferred to Dr. Dou from the Manners group and the Mann group. New collaboration between the three-parties, i.e. Manners group, the Mann group, and the fellow’s group at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been established based on the fellow’s work. The fellow co-hosted Prof. Ian Manners’s visit to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and organized a mini-symposium for Prof. Ian Manners on April 11, 2018, three students from Hongjing Dou’s group presented in the mini-symposium regarding collaborative projects.
