Professional record of achievement in engineering - towards portable qualifications

Objective

OBJECTIVES
One of the constraints applying to training, which is widely recognised at Community level, is the difficulty experienced in communicating educational and training needs and the results obtained. The project aims to establish a scheme within the mechanical engineering industry for producing personal/career development plans, determining associated learning needs, and keeping track of the training credits previously earned towards obtaining relevant qualifications. The scheme should be helpful in forging links between initial and continuing qualification systems, for increasing understanding and mutual recognition of different systems, and for planning and implementing continuing training.

ACTIVITIES
The partners will develop a set of preliminary specifications for an achievement scheme and engage in a series of detailed discussions and interviews aimed at establishing a consensus of opinion and refining the concept. This will culminate in an agreed plan of action for implementation. The scheme is primarily aimed at providing a common language and structure for recording continuing training and professional development. The product will then be implemented on a small scale in six countries, and the design will be modified on the basis of extensive consultations and experiences gained, before the final implementation. The project will involve the training of individuals, tutors/mentors, counsellors and trainers who will have to use the tool.

PRODUCTS
The project will result in a tool for the planning of individual development needs and for the recording of learning progress in a format that will be useful to the individual, to employers, to universities and to professional institutions.
