Interactive multilingual tutorials on CD-ROM: Procedures and practices in European construction

Objective

OBJECTIVES
With closer European integration, an increasing number of skilled workers and professionals will be seeking employment in other European countries. In parallel, the evidence is that the completion of the internal market is having an impact within the construction sector throughout the EU. The dynamics of these changes are concurrent with major technological changes both within individual countries and across the European construction system. The aim of this project is to provide new low-cost training tools in order to enhance the transparency of vocational procedures and to improve foreign language skills in the multinational construction sector.

ACTIVITIES
Relevant subject material will be compiled from construction sites in four European countries. Materials will be based on the same situational context to allow comparisons between countries. A computer model of a building will be developed and adapted to include the differences between the countries. Modular computer based training templates will be developed to locate and check foreign language terminology and subject matter. All materials will be integrated with multilingual exercises and feedback. Finally, the end product will be tested and disseminated.
