The adaptation of Scandinavian short-term courses for the European forestry industry - Meeting the needs of Europe's forest industry SMEs

Objective

International competition from non-EU/EEA countries threatens the European forestry industry. This pilot project aims to meet changing human resource needs within the forestry sector while taking account of the need for biodiversity and sustainability in forest management objectives. These needs include a flexible, highly skilled workforce; improvements in the quality, scope and content of existing forestry short course provision; coherent linkages between industrial and environmental requirements; and the development of European-wide vocational training systems and common certification for the forest industry.

Through the review of existing Scandinavian short-term courses, adaptation of selected courses relevant to the industry and particularly to SMEs, and dissemination of its products and outcomes, the project will directly benefit employees in forestry SMEs, students on initial and continuing vocational courses and training personnel in the forestry industry. Project outcomes will include adapted short-term courses, training manuals, guides and slides, a multi-media resource kit and an Internet web site and bulletin board.

Impact
The impact of the project will be to meet the human resource needs of the forestry industry, especially within SMEs, through the adaptation of courses, the development of on and off-line training materials and the aim of working towards the recognition of qualifications through common certification of workplace-based training.
