Objective
The pressure of competition is currently forcing sub-contractors in the automobile and aeronautical construction industries to reduce costs and manufacturing times, increase company flexibility and enhance production quality. Small and medium-sized mechanical-engineering companies are therefore finding themselves faced with both technical and organisational problems. Spreading the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), a facility already widely used by the manufacturers themselves, is specifically targeted in this project as a means of improving SMEs' ability to meet demands set by their customers and to compete successfully. The development and dissemination of this technology in sub-contracting mechanical-engineering SMEs presupposes setting up a specific, innovative training programme for managers and sections of the staff in these companies.
The aim of the FORMEDI project is to meet this need by developing highly specific training programmes, i.e. a brief general training module, presentation of a real case-study and a self-study module on the Internet. The training design process will be based on close co-operation between a large automobile manufacturer, a research centre and technology-transfer specialists in the SME sector.
Impact
To improve the competitiveness of large numbers of European SMEs in the automobile and aeronautical industries. To improve their chances of survival in the face of challenges from Asian and Central European countries.
