Objective
The aim of the ULTRATEC 2000 project is to facilitate innovation in the area of information and communications technology (ICT) in SMEs in ultra-peripheral regions. Not taking advantage of innovation could mean exacerbating development deficiencies and the marginalisation of the regions in question, whilst coming to terms with it can provide positive opportunities in terms of de-isolation and economic growth. The project partners propose to:
- prepare decision-makers for investment choices relating to ICTs;
- identify the skills necessary to make optimum use of ICTs in SMEs in the tourism and trade sectors, i.e. in the industries which predominate in these regions;
- ensure the acquisition of these new skills by adapting existing vocational training programmes.
The project schedule is divided into three phases:
- an analysis and study phase in which existing ICT use and training will be evaluated and the skills needed to master these technologies identified;
- following this, the partners will design and test various training systems enabling SMEs, computer companies and training organisations to acquire the skills needed to optimise the potential offered by ICTs;
- finally, the work accomplished will lead to the development of a methodological model which will ensure that economic development lessons learned from the new technologies project can be transferred to other regions.
Impact
Developing the ultra-peripheral regions of Europe. Improving understanding of the best conditions for use and development of new information and communication technology in SMEs.
