Objective
The aim of this project is to design computerised modules to test first and second language learning skills. As the objective is to set up a self-evaluation system for multi-media PCs or via the Internet, the test procedure will be as automated as possible. Four languages will be covered by these tests: German, English, French and Italian.
Comprehension tests will be based on multi-media documents (comprising texts, sound and images) suited to different levels. Standardised exercises will be developed and text comprehension tests will be based on new and detailed linguistic analysis supported by electronic dictionaries and grammars jointly developed by the European REFLEX network. Evaluation will be carried out on the basis of the results of the linguistic analysis and multiple choice questions. A number of modules will focus on evaluating foreign-language knowledge while others will assess native-language knowledge to support learners experiencing difficulties. The autonomy of these modules will ensure substantial flexibility in their usage. The system is aimed at language book publishers (of manuals and self-study packages on CD-Rom or networks) and large training organisations (distance-education centres, in-service training and university language departments).
Impact
Enabling self-evaluation of language skills outside traditional institutional structures.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
