Objective
Changes in technology and competition cause changes in occupations, which in turn add to the need for lifelong learning. New clusters of skills are urgently needed. For example, the traditional crafts of technical electricity, plumbing and air conditioning are compartmentalised, which causes lack of co-operation and ultimately results in wasted and overlapping work. To reduce the barriers between these crafts, it is vital to train employees to be multi-skilled.
This project aims to provide new methods and ways of responding to the impact of new building technology, to integrate initial vocational training with in-company training, to promote new forms of tutoring/mentoring and on-the-job training, and to create a new multi-skill training programme in electrical fitting, plumbing and air-conditioning. The programme will comprise four modules. It will be appropriate for distance, computer-based and on-the-job training use. The project itself will try out new training methods, for example the use of a virtual school system, work-shadowing and continuous evaluation. Multimedia material will be produced for the Internet.
Impact
The above programme will be applicable in both continuing and apprenticeship training programmes. It will also be integrated into the national education system. It will contribute to the development of new clusters of skills covering a range of different crafts.
