Objective
Employers need to find better ways of ensuring that their personnel are competent. Employees need access to training resources in the workplace. Training providers need to develop new methods to support learning in the workplace. It is in this context that the project will be developed.
The project seeks to use a combination of technologies to provide cargo operations personnel - on board, at sea or in ports - with a competence assurance system. It will develop: multimedia training; self assessment modules in English and Dutch; tutor/assessor support via fax, e-mail and desk-top conferencing; and short seminars delivered via video conferencing. The areas to be covered will be: lifting and handling cargo; emergency procedures; security within the port environment and handling dangerous goods.
Impact
The use of multimedia solutions will allow for flexibility, relevance and greater access to training provision. Video conferencing will increase the provision of learning and assessment opportunities in all ports, especially smaller ones with fewer resources.
