Objective
The changes taking place in Europe mean that SMEs, which are very strongly represented in the tourism industry, will be providing over half the jobs in growth sectors by the year 2000. This rapid inter-industrial labour migration necessitates increased endeavour in the area of continuing vocational training in the target sectors in order to be able to access qualified staff. In view of the growing global competition for tourism markets, qualified personnel are an important competitive factor. Contrary to these developments, however, there is little readiness on the part of SMEs in the tourism sector to engage in CVT. This analysis project is therefore aimed at highlighting those influencing factors that hinder or encourage readiness to engage in training as well as gathering qualitative and quantitative findings regarding future qualification requirements.
Achieving these objectives requires looking intensively into the situation of CVT and establishing a broad empirical base. A progressive methodology using the normal procedures of empirical social research will therefore be applied and comprise literature analyses, talks with experts, pilot surveys, intensive interviews and a wide-ranging representative survey relating to the main findings obtained. The purpose of the European partnership is to compare varying regional CVT situations, which can display differences brought about by cultural or development factors but which nevertheless - as a working hypothesis - result for the main part in similar cause factors. Another central working hypothesis for the project is that continuing training activities in SMEs in the tourism sector are influenced to a substantial extent by a complex of individual and company-related factors as well as the structure of the ranges of services offered.
Impact
Publications in scientific journals and the publication of a book are planned as transferable results of this analysis project regarding the CVT in small companies in the tourism sector.
